Calling all parents of 6th-8th graders!
On Saturday, August 1 from 3:00-4:00, we are hosting a middle school study skills tutoring session at Black Elm on Long Hollow Pike to give middle school students some tools and resources to give them a strong start to the new school year. Session includes a cup of coffee or drink of choice!
Did you know that "because study skills are so closely linked with academic success and many middle school students are not currently using study skills effectively, integrating study skills instruction into the core content area classrooms at the middle school level could lead to higher levels of achievement"? (Thorpe, C. (2010). Promoting academic achievement in the middle school classroom: Integrating effective study skills instruction. ERIC. https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED510601.pdf).
Litteratus wants to change this. The good news is that developing study skills does not require hours of tutoring! In just one session, your middle schooler will receive key skills including:
-Using planners and calendars
-Breaking large assignments into manageable steps
-Time management
-Active note-taking
-Retrieval practice (self-quizzing)
-Spaced review
-Reading informational texts effectively
-Annotating texts
-Vocabulary learning strategies
-Test preparation
-Goal setting
-Reflection after assessments
-Digital organization (files, folders, cloud storage)
-Managing distractions
-Self-advocacy and help-seeking
Jenna Fleming will be leading this session. Space is limited to 8. For more information or to register, click the link below!
