READING-ON-THE-GO DISCUSSION GUIDE
Many parents have shared that they find it challenging to squeeze in their kids' reading in their busy schedules. Between ball practice, scouts, dance, and trying to fit dinner in-between, getting those few extra minutes to read is near impossible. I encourage my students to read aloud in the car when they are headed to practice or to and from school. This way they can turn those 10-15 minutes into an opportunity for building fluency and engaging in meaningful conversation with an adult. Here is a "Reading-On-the-Go" discussion guide that you can pick and choose questions to ask after your student reads aloud to you. What I love about this is that it gets kids talking, and it also gets them thinking about what they are reading.
TRADING CARD CHARACTER GRAPHIC ORGANIZER
As a language arts teacher, I am always looking for ways to embed our state standards into our reading while connecting the standards to students' real life experiences. Getting students to really understand the characters they read about by describing what they are like through their words, thoughts, and actions is an important skill to develop reading comprehension. This trading card graphic organizer is a way students can organize their thinking around a character by listing their traits, thoughts, words, and actions in the story.
